About Bracco Diagnostics

A number of chemical groups constitute CW agents and present a host of life-threatening effects.

Chemical Group Example(s) Life-threatening Effects
Vesicants Distilled mustard (2,2'-dichlorodiethyl sulfide; referred to as HD); T-2 toxin Blistering of the skin, eyes, lungs: percutaneous, respiratory & alimentary hazards.
Blood agents Hydrogen cyanide Inhalation can cause death.
Nerve agents Sarin (isopropyl methylphosphonofluoridate); Soman (pinacolyl methylphosphonofluoridate): VX (O-ethyl S-[2-(diisopropylamino)ethyl) ethyl] methylphosphonothionate). Loss of motor control & death: percutaneous & respiratory threats. Inhibits acetyl-cholinesterase, resulting in accumulation of neuro-transmitter acetylcholine.

When exposed to CW agents that pose a respiratory threat, the life-threatening effects can be ameliorated by the use of protective masks. However, since some of these agents can also penetrate through the skin, additional protection is needed. Some protection is provided by special clothing (boots, gloves, etc.); however, these represent only a portion of the needed protection in the face of a CW agent threat. The rapid removal and/or neutralization of chemical agents that have contacted the skin is necessary in circumstances when inadequate warning has been given, or breaches in the protective gear have occurred.

RSDL has been shown to remove and/or neutralize a broad spectrum of CW agents or T2 toxin from the skin.
